Scrap, sterling and pre-decimal coin
Scrap gold and silver
For scrap precious metal we generally pay 15% under the fine-metal value. Scrap is priced on its actual purity, not its gross weight — we work out how much pure metal is present, then apply the scrap rate to that.
| Example | Fine metal | We pay (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 g of .925 sterling silver | 9.25 g fine silver | $22.44 |
| 100 g of .925 sterling silver | 92.5 g fine silver | $224.41 |
| 1966 Australian Round 50c — 80% silver | approx. 0.3416 ozt fine silver | $25.78 |
| 10 g of .750 (18ct) gold | 7.5 g fine gold | $1,231.95 |
| 10 g of .375 (9ct) gold | 3.75 g fine gold | $615.97 |
Pre-decimal Australian silver — including the 1966 round 50c and 1946-1963 coinage — is bought at the scrap rate on its actual silver content, not as investment bullion. Prices are indicative until the coins are physically inspected and authenticated.
Other purities and weights are quoted the same way. Send us the details and we will work it out for you.

Email support@thecoinshed.com.au or use the form below. The more you can tell us, the more useful the first quote will be:
- What each item is — metal, weight, mint or brand
- How many of each
- Stated purity, if it’s marked
- Whether you still have the packaging, capsule, assay card or certificate
- Photos of both sides, and of any markings
Good light and a plain background are plenty — photos don’t need to be perfect.
Please talk to us before posting anything. We’ll agree how it should be sent. You’re also welcome to bring items to our Tingalpa office by appointment.
What do those prices assume?
- Investment bullion rates apply to .999 or finer bullion from recognised mints
- Stated weights are treated as fine metal content, as they are for stamped bullion
- Scrap is priced on actual purity, worked out from gross weight
- The final figure depends on verification when we see the items
How is a quote worked out, and is it binding?
It depends on the metal, weight, purity, condition and the market price at the moment we quote. Metal prices move continuously, so a quote reflects the market when it was given.
A quote is indicative until we confirm it. It isn’t locked in when you first receive it and it isn’t an offer to purchase. The final figure is the one we confirm after seeing the items.
What happens when I bring items in?
Everything is inspected and verified before a purchase completes — weight, dimensions and authenticity — whether you bring items in or send them.
If our final figure differs from the indicative quote we’ll tell you why, and you’re free to decline.
What do I need to bring?
Government-issued photo ID from every seller, and we may need your payment details before a purchase can complete. That applies to all sales — it’s how we keep proper records of what we buy.
Is there anything you won’t buy?
We may decline any item — usually where it can’t be authenticated to our satisfaction, where condition or composition makes it unsuitable, or where we can’t verify provenance.
Declining isn’t a judgement about you. It nearly always means we can’t be certain enough about the item to put our name to it.
What do you actually buy?
Mainly investment bullion — gold and silver bars, rounds and bullion coins from recognised mints, in sound condition with original packaging or assay card where applicable.
We also look at bullion-grade material outside that description. If you’re unsure whether we’d buy it, just ask; describing it takes a minute.
