PCGS Grading
The Coin Shed can lodge coins with PCGS on your behalf. You bring us the coins, we prepare and submit them, and we handle the process through to their return.
What we do
PCGS submissions require an account and correct handling at every step. Rather than set that up yourself for a handful of coins, you can submit through us. We prepare the paperwork, pack and dispatch the coins, track the submission, and let you know as soon as grades are released.
Grading is decided by PCGS, not by us
We do not grade coins and we do not influence grades. Every grade, designation and authentication decision is made by PCGS according to their own standards. We cannot predict a grade, guarantee an outcome, or appeal one on your behalf.
If a coin comes back at a lower grade than you hoped, or is returned ungraded as a details or authenticity outcome, that is the determination of PCGS. We will explain what the result means, but we cannot change it.
Service fees
These are our current handling fees per coin for each PCGS service tier:
| Service | Fee per coin |
|---|---|
| PCGS Modern Value | $45 |
| PCGS Modern | $65 |
| PCGS Regular | $79 |
| PCGS Express | $139 |
| PCGS TrueView (optional imaging) | $12 |
Which tier a coin qualifies for depends on its age, type and declared value, and PCGS sets those rules. We will confirm the correct tier and the total cost for your specific coins before anything is sent, so please confirm current fees with us when you enquire.
How to submit
- Email support@thecoinshed.com.au describing the coins you would like graded, with photographs if you have them.
- We confirm which service tier applies and what the total will be.
- You bring the coins to us, or we agree how they should be sent.
- We record and photograph every coin before it leaves us.
- The coins are packed and dispatched to PCGS.
- We notify you when grades are released and arrange return or collection.
What you need to provide
- The coins themselves, handled as little as possible
- Any original packaging, capsules or certificates that came with them
- Your declared value for each coin, which affects the service tier and insurance
- Your contact details and how you would like the coins returned
Please do not clean or polish a coin before submission. Cleaning is detectable and will affect the outcome.
Turnaround
Turnaround is set by PCGS and varies with the service tier and how busy they are. It can extend considerably around new releases and major shows.
We cannot guarantee a return date, and we do not quote one. If your submission is time-sensitive, tell us before you submit so we can tell you whether it is realistic.
Shipping, insurance and handling
Coins are recorded and photographed before dispatch and are sent tracked. We will confirm the insurance arrangements that apply to your submission before anything is sent — this depends on the declared value of the coins, so it is agreed case by case rather than set as a blanket policy.
Please raise any questions about risk and insurance with us before handing over coins, not after.
When your coins come back
Graded coins are returned sealed in PCGS holders with their grade and certification number. We check each returned coin against what was sent, then contact you to arrange collection from our Tingalpa office or return by tracked post.
You are free to keep the coins, or to talk to us about selling them. There is no obligation either way.
Grading enquiry
